Ceuzany

Ilha d'Melodia

Born to Cape Verdean parents in Senegal (her father was from Fogo and her mother from São Vicente), CEUZANY lived in that country until the age of 2, when her family returned to Mindelo. In 2008, she won an award at a gala contest for singers from the island of Fogo. Arlindo Evora, the leader of Cordas do Sol, met her there and invited her to join the group. From 2007 to 2013, she brought her distinctive shine to the concerts and records of the band (who were then at the height of their popularity), channeling all her energy and exuberance into their performances.

With her first solo album, Nha Vida (released in 2012, it included the track Ultimo Chance), Ceuzany revealed her tremendous vocal potential and talent as a performer, attracting huge interest from professionals and national and foreign media.

Ilha d’Melodia, her second album, further underlines the quality of her melodic expression and vocal power. On it, Ceuzany bares her soul: each of the songs reveals the experiences and emotions that have shaped the facets of her personality and informed her choices.

01 Amor e Dor Written by Jorge Tavares, this song is about freedom and inconstancy in love. Referring to such legendary couples as Samson and Delilah, Romeo and Juliet, and Joseph and Mary, it not only symbolizes Love with a capital L, but also the emotional bond between the artist and her fans.

02 Cabo Verde Lá Fora After a traditional intro, a duet with Kiddy Bonz ushers us into the world of rap and provides a transversal view of the singer’s experience, which reflects the dreams of a new generation intent on further enhancing Cape Verde’s reputation worldwide, like the archipelago’s cultural icons.

03 Labanta Bu Bai is one of the three songs on the album by Elida Almeida. Its message celebrates and gives thanks for life from day to day, with a special tribute to the forces of nature and the energy they provide.

04 Mindel D’Novas Written by Ary Duarte, the first single from the album is a supreme ode to the city of Mindelo and its unique identity. The writer has successfully captured the true essence of the port, together with all its distinctive traits, bringing us Mindelo in its entirety as conveyed by the soul, performance and voice of Ceuzany as she sways to the heartbeat of her city.

05 Dança Ma Mi Criola A Cape Verdean classic written by Toy Vieira for Tito Paris at the start of the 90s, this song is one of Ceuzany’s childhood memories. It is perfectly in tune with the album’s inspirational approach of paying tribute to her land.

06 Kem Bô É Written by guitarist Hernani Almeida, this track is an appeal to the conscience and essence of humanity.

07 Fera na Sukupira This Romeu di Lurdes composition conveys the authentic nature of highly colorful local markets. It paints a detailed picture of their atmosphere and the experiences of the people come there to buy or sell.

08 Nha Dona This track by Nely Cruz, Elida Almeida’s bassist, was inspired by the tales told to her by her grandfather. It looks back over the struggle of Cape Verdean women in previous generations, describing their suffering and despair at life’s misfortunes, poverty and the responsibility of raising their children, usually alone.

09 Mai di Migrason by Elida Almeida continues the tribute to Cape Verde that forms the album’s connecting thread. While the sea may inspire fear and symbolize the sorrow of separation, it can also be an endless source of inspiration and a key ally in the battle to subsist.

10 Tolobaska, also written by Elida Almeida, is all about surrendering to an all-devouring love that borders on madness.
