Kompass
KOMPASS - biography Kompass, meaning musical “time”, is the collective name chosen by the Cape Verdean musicians who have been working with Cesaria Evora since the recording of Café Atlantico in 1999: Fernando “Nando” Andrade (piano and conductor) João José “Kako” Pina Alves (guitars), Antonio “To” Pina Alves (cavaquinho and vocals), Virgilio Julio “Gil” Duarte (bass guitar), Antonio “Totinho” Gomes Fernandes (saxophones), Ademiro “Miroca” Paris (percussion). On this occasion, they have brought in other Cape Verdean musicians – Aderito Gonçalves Pontes (acoustic guitar) and Carlos Monteiro (drums) – as well as the Cuban string section that performs with Cesaria on stage and on record: Julian Corrales Subida (first violin), Leonel Bermudez Hernandez (violin) Daniel Rodriguez (cello). Like many musicians who spend most of their time on the road all over the world, they pass the time by playing together, working on Cape Verdean standards or new numbers they have written. Their joy in being together, playing together and sharing the same nostalgia and delights gradually led to the idea of preserving these essential moments on record. So today, Cape Verdean label Harmonia is releasing an album, Jardin Tropical (Tropical Garden), that is all softly lilting melodies: a collection of tracks including both original songs and cover versions, especially Mexe Mexe, a Cape Verdean classic.
